Update or dispose–what’s the smarter move? – MCG’s MIPster the Tipster™

MIPster the Tipster: Update or Dispose and Reenter in Fixed Assets

Hello friends. Here is a clear rule for fixed assets in MIP. If the life or the value changes, dispose of the asset and reenter it. Do this when you extend the useful life of a vehicle or reset the value of a building, because fresh setup keeps depreciation and reporting right going forward. If the life and value do not change and you are only moving the asset to a new category, keep it simple. Update the category and post a journal entry to move the balances. You get clean books without extra work.

The moment you will feel. Month end is close. You are reviewing fixed assets. You spot a change in useful life on a van. You dispose and reenter. Depreciation aligns. Reports match. No surprises at audit.

Here is the tip. Change to life or value means dispose and reenter. Category change only means update and journal. Simple rules make asset management calm.
