Is zero-based budgeting right for this cycle? – MCG’s MIPster the Tipster™

Zero-Based Budgeting Forces Decisions Instead of Assumptions

Budgets often inherit last year’s structure without much scrutiny. In MIP®, the Budget Wizard allows you to break that pattern by selecting Zero Budget, which starts the worksheet with no prior data carried forward.

Using zero-based budgeting changes the conversation. Each line has to be entered deliberately, which makes assumptions visible and forces discussion about what is still needed versus what is simply familiar. This is especially useful after program changes, funding shifts, or leadership transitions, when last year’s numbers no longer reflect reality.

Zero Budget mode is not something most organizations use every year, and it should not be. It takes more effort and more judgment. When applied intentionally, though, it provides a clearer view of priorities and exposes costs that have been rolling forward without reconsideration.

This video is for finance teams that need a true reset and want budgets to reflect current conditions rather than historical momentum. It is not intended for organizations that are only making incremental adjustments and want speed over examination.

McGovern Consulting Group provides MIP Accounting® Training and Implementation Services. We focus on budgeting methods like this because the tool you choose shapes the quality of the decisions that follow.
