Are you running comparative reports monthly? – MCG’s MIPster the Tipster™

Comparative Budget Reports Show Where Plans and Results Start to Diverge

Budgets are most useful when they are reviewed against actual performance on a regular basis. In MIP®, comparative reports such as Summary Budget Comparison and Budget vs. Actual, found under Reports → Budget, make that review straightforward.

Running these reports shows where spending and revenue are tracking as expected and where they are drifting. Patterns emerge earlier when comparisons are made monthly instead of waiting until quarter end or year end. That timing matters because adjustments are easier when there is still room to respond.

Leadership benefits from this view because it frames performance in context. Instead of reacting to isolated numbers, they can see movement against the plan and decide whether intervention is needed or whether trends are unfolding as anticipated.

This video is for finance teams that want budget reviews to support timely decisions rather than retrospective explanations. It is not intended for organizations that rely on end-of-year analysis to understand how the budget performed.

McGovern Consulting Group provides MIP Accounting® Training and Implementation Services. We focus on comparative reporting because budgets only guide behavior when they are revisited consistently.
