Are split deposits mirrored correctly in MIP? – MCG’s MIPster the Tipster™

When a Bank Splits a Deposit, Your Reconciliation Depends on Matching It Exactly

Banks do not always post deposits the way you expect. A single deposit from your system may appear as multiple amounts on the bank statement, often split by funding source, timing, or processing rules. When that happens, MIP® will not reconcile cleanly unless the deposit structure mirrors what the bank shows.

If the bank splits a deposit, MIP needs the same split. That usually means recording the deposit on separate lines or adjusting how the deposit is grouped so each cleared amount matches the bank one to one. If the totals match but the structure does not, the reconciliation will continue to show differences that never quite resolve.

This is one of the most common causes of lingering reconciliation issues. The numbers look right in aggregate, but the mismatch in detail keeps items uncleared and forces workarounds later. Matching the bank’s structure upfront keeps the reconciliation straightforward and prevents small discrepancies from rolling forward month after month.

This video is for accounting teams that handle deposits regularly and want reconciliations to close cleanly without manual adjustments. It is not intended for organizations that prefer to carry differences forward and explain them away later.

McGovern Consulting Group provides MIP Accounting® Training and Implementation Services. We focus on practical details like this because reconciliations are only as clean as the decisions made at entry.

If you want fewer lingering differences and faster month-end closes, you can schedule time with us to review your reconciliation process.
