You Do Not Need the “Right” Degree. You Need the Right Mentor.

There is something many people do not know about our managing partner, Dennis McGovern.

He does not have an accounting degree.

His degree is in marketing.

At first glance, that might seem unusual for someone who has spent decades building expertise in accounting, financial systems, and nonprofit consulting. But his career is a reminder of something that often gets overlooked. A degree can open a door, but mentorship is often what teaches you how to walk through it.

Early in his career, Dennis had the opportunity to work with Bruce Nickerson, a CPA who recognized his potential and chose to invest in it. That investment made a lasting difference.

The mechanics of accounting were not the problem. Debits and credits made sense. The logic came naturally. Math was never the obstacle. What mattered was learning how to think beyond the mechanics. Real accounting is not just about memorizing rules or following formulas. It requires judgment, analysis, and the ability to understand how decisions in one area affect everything around them.

That kind of understanding is hard to get from a textbook alone. It develops when someone experienced takes the time to teach you, challenge you, and help you see the bigger picture. Bruce did that for Dennis, and the impact stayed with him.

There is a common assumption that expertise comes mainly from formal education. Education matters, and strong academic preparation has real value. But some of the most important professional growth happens outside the classroom. It happens through experience. It happens through repetition. Most of all, it happens through mentorship.

That kind of learning stays with you because it is practical, personal, and tested in real situations. It builds confidence as much as competence. It gives people the chance to grow into their abilities instead of simply being measured by what is listed on a transcript.

Mentorship also leaves a lasting sense of responsibility. Dennis has said, “I am forever indebted to Bruce Nickerson.” That kind of gratitude does not come from a routine professional relationship. It comes from knowing that someone took your future seriously and helped shape it.

When that happens, it changes more than a career path. It changes how you see your own responsibility to others.

That belief is part of the culture at McGovern Consulting Group. We believe opportunity should be paired with guidance. That is why we bring in high school and college students and give them meaningful exposure to real work. We want them to gain experience, but we also want them to gain confidence, perspective, and a clearer sense of what they are capable of becoming.

Being a smaller firm gives us an advantage here. We can move quickly, create opportunities, and invest in people in a way that is personal and direct. We are not simply trying to fill roles. We are trying to help people develop.

Degrees matter, and they always will. But they are not the whole story.

The right mentor can change everything.

A good mentor does not just teach you what to do. A good mentor teaches you how to think, how to grow, and how to build a career that would not have been possible without someone willing to invest in your potential.
